Teaching has got to be one of the most rewarding, meaningful and inspirational jobs on the planet. Fact. In our experience, there are 5 reasons why teachers decide to make the switch to supply. Let us know if we’ve missed any.

1) Flexibility

The majority of supply teachers we speak to left their teaching positions because of new commitments which were difficult to manage alongside full-time jobs, for example, raising a family. There are also supply teachers that have taken on new passions, like writing their first novel or in one case running trampolining classes!

2) Fewer commitments free the mind

Supply teaching, especially day-to-day supply teaching, generally comes with fewer responsibilities. For example, teachers are not expected to mark homework, plan lessons or attend parents' evenings.

On Airsupply’s platform teachers can choose to accept or reject jobs, depending on the tasks required. Teachers can also choose a separate day rate for long-term and short-term supply, so they will be rewarded for extra work and responsibility.

3) Get back into the system

It can be difficult to find a suitable job during the academic year, as many permanent teaching positions are filled during the summer holidays. It can also be a daunting experience to move into teaching roles after an extended leave.

Supply teaching can be a great way to ease yourself back into schools whilst gaining valuable experience and enabling you to ‘try before you buy’ at a number of schools before choosing to apply for permanent positions.

4) Learn while you earn

In the recent Supply Teacher Survey that Airsupply conducted, we were surprised by the proportion of our teachers that decided to move to supply teaching as a way of getting some hands-on experience whilst studying for a teaching qualification. This is a great idea. Why not pay off some of your student debt early? There were also a large number of experienced teachers from outside the UK that wanted a better grasp of the education system before making a full-time move.

5) Retirement

Some of our best supply teachers are retired, with over 40 years in the classroom. They found it a way of staying in the profession and earning additional income, while not committing to the demands of a full-time job. And we’re very lucky to have them!

We advise you to think carefully about making the move to supply because the benefits also come with the additional pressures of being an independent freelancer. Feel free to ring us on 0330 122 6629. We can either speak to you directly about the move or put you in touch with teachers in a similar boat.
